Celtics Fall To Lakers

Yes sir, Kobe hit a big shot with 7.3 seconds left to take down the Celtics. Boston has some issues right now, but I am sure they will be solved at some point down the stretch. They are too good to be giving up leads to Orlando and LA. They are too good to get swept in the season series by Atlanta. The Celtics led by 6 with just over 5 minutes left, and found a way to lose. They were up by 7 after 3 quarters, yet found a way to give the game away. This will not happen in the playoffs.

But just when you think things are at their very worst, be grateful that you never had to have a press conference like the one above. Kobe is a scumbag, and we will see him in the NBA Finals. The real payback for the Celtics will be in June.

Merrimack Falls In OT

Merrimack lost to #12 UNH at the Whittemore Center last night when Paul Thompson's goal with just 11 seconds remaining in overtime slid past Andrew Braithwaite. The Warriors were aided by two power play goals from Chris Barton in the 3-2 loss. Braithwaite made 42 saves in front of a sold out crowd.

Merrimack has yet to win a game away from Lawler. “It’s hard to believe we haven’t won a game on the road,” said head coach Mark Dennehy. “We have a very resilient group of young men. We weren’t playing our best hockey in the first period, but Braithwaite kept us in it. We turned it around in the second, and it was an evenly played game from there until overtime.”

The Warriors will face Northeastern next friday at Lawler Arena.

Herschel Walker's MMA Debut

Former NFL running back Herschel Walker was in the ring last night for his debut MMA match. He is 47 years old, and I will say it, he is the best looking 47 year old guy I have ever seen. Holy moly, I wouldn't want to take a hammer punch from this guy. Have you ever seen a 47 year old look ripped like this? This guy could probably help the Patriots out in the backfield. God knows it looks like he still has the physical ability to compete. Impressive to say the least. On the flip side, how can his opponent ever step back into the ring? He must be embarrassed beyond belief.

Unlucky # 7

The Bruins have lost 7 straight games. 7 straight! It is Boston's longest losing streak since 1997. To make this seem more staggering...7 straight losses is like losing 8.5% of your season schedule. Pretty sad indeed.

What are the Bruins going to do about this? Obviously they are not going to trade their first round picks. That means they are either going to play the waiting game, hoping all their star players return sooner rather than later...or trade players for the simple reason to shake things up.

I thought the Bruins were going to go on a tear after the Winter Classic, unfortunately I was dead wrong about this. The Bruins have showed no heart, and no consistency. They lose shootouts, lose in overtime, give up late leads, and get blown out. They lose in every possible way. Boston officially blows, and there season will be over in the next two week if they can't turn it around.

Things That Suck In Boston Right Now

Vince Wilfork- Shut your mouth, and accept the fact that you are getting hit with the franchise tag.

Asante Samuel - Shut your mouth, and accept the fact that you got the franchise tag, and then bolted town for $$$. Also, I think you owe us money for the stress you caused us by not picking off Manning.

The Bruins - I was just kidding last week when I said the Bruins were tanking on purpose. But now, after watching them skate miserably against Columbus, Carolina and Buffalo, I am not so sure.

Dennis Wideman - Man, he is pathetic. And a mental case as well. It is great when players absolutely collapse, and then wear their expression on the their face. You can tell he is just a beaten man.

Hawks/Celtics - Does this matchup frustrate everyone? I just hate the fans in Atlanta. Quiet down, I am trying to watch the game. The Hawks swept the season series from the Celtics, and now they will feel confident going into a playoff series against Boston. Not good.

Glen Davis - Shirtless fighting, telling fans to suck his dick, and now saying he should change his name to uno-uno. Come on Big Baby, stop being a Big Baby.

Mike Lowell - He is earning a lot of money to be a PT DH. You have to feel bad for Mikey Lowell. Nobody wants him, even though he hit the ball pretty well when he was on the field last year. Unfortunately, he can't run. In my mind, however, I still think he might be a better option than Adrian Beltre.

BC Eagles Mens Hoops - The most up-and-down annoying team in Boston. Beat Clemson, lose a heartbreaker to Virgina Tech. Beat Miami in Florida, get trounced by 20 against Duke in Durham.

Too many things suck right now in Boston. A Colts loss to the Saints will certainly be a step in turning things around.

Red Sox Tickets On Sale This Morning...I'm Not On The Phone

Not to say they won't have a good team this year, but I'm not chunking down 90 bucks a ticket to watch Marco Scutaro and Mike Cameron's defense. Just so Theo can buy a year's time till his prospect binkies make it to the bigs. No thanks!

Make It Two In A Row For Merrimack

The Warriors defeated #12 UNH last night at Lawler 3-2. The Warriors, who last week ended a losing streak, won their second straight game. Merrimack now has the nation's best home record at 9-1.

Warrior forward Karl Stollery recorded two goals last night, including the game winner in the third period to life Merrimack over Hockey East's highest ranked team. Captain Chris Barton also scored. Goaltender Andrew Braithwaite notched his second straight win with 28 saves. The two teams will finish the season series tonight at the Whittemore Center at 7:00pm.

Gerald Laird's Grandfather Touches Eddie House's Wife

What the hell is with this story? Gerald Laird, the Detroit Tigers catcher, was involved in a weird incident in Phoenix involving the wife of Eddie House. Gerald Laird and his brother Brandon (a NY Yankees prospect) were intoxicated at a bar in Phoenix after the C's fell to the Suns on 12/30. Charlsie House, was present at the same bar. The Laird brothers entered the bar intoxicated, as bouncers for some reason let them in. Brandon apparently shouted some derogatory remarks at Charlsie and other women. He then took a swing at one of the women. Security officers at the scene got involved, and a scuffle broke out.

And here's where it gets weird...apparently, out of nowhere, the 70-year old grandfather of the Laird's started touching Charlsie inapporpriately. Crazy old man getting a piece is what it sounds like to me. Charges are now coming forward on him.

The Juke will update you on the situation once more information is available.

Better Than A Horror Movie

I usually only post about sports, except for my awesome "Google Has Issues" post a while back. But these Brinks Home Security commercial are hilarious. My personal favorite is this one. I call it the "get Brinks home security or some creepy guy will rape your wife and daughters while you are away on business" ad. Most of the commercials have a similar theme. Keep in mind that this is an actual ad, not some SNL skit.

This is not an actual commercial, but a funny spoof from some guy on youtube.

Tonight Is A Night Of Change

The Bruins are finally getting healthy again. Marc Savard will make his return to the lineup on a line with Miroslav Satan and Milan Lucic. Marco Sturm and Steve Begin, both who have been practicing this week, will not play. But it's time for the Bruins to man up, and no better time to do it then against the division leading Sabres.

Meanwhile the C's are in Atlanta tonight after coming off of last night's tough loss to Orlando. The C's haven't had much luck with Atlanta lately since they met in the 2008 playoffs. Their three-game losing streak to the Hawks ends tonight.

Asante Speaks Out - I Am Still Speaking Out About Him Not Picking Off Manning In The Super Bowl

Kind of a weird video, but it gets the job done.

Asante Samuel spoke in defense of Vince Wilfork and his disdain towards getting tapped with the 'Franchise Tag.' The Globe has a series of good quotes from Samuel, as he slams the Patriots. His big line was '“I don’t think they care about you, in my opinion,” which was directed towards the Patriots front office.

I still think Asante may have picked up a raise if he picked off Eli Manning. Frigging bum cost us the championship. I think you have been hanging out with Mike Vick too much, you have turned into an idiot.

The Sports Juke: Where Amazing Happens

Corwin Brown, Patriots Newest DB Coach

The Patriots have hired former Notre Dame defensive coordinator Corwin Brown as the team's defensive backs coach. He was let go when former Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly elected not to retain. Brown was originally the DB coach for the Jets from 2004-06 and was a former player for Bill Belichick when both were with the Jets in 1997 and 1998. He also played for the Patriots from 1993-1996.

The Irish's defense struggled last season. They averaged giving up 26 points per game and nearly 400 yards of offense.

Funny Save

I have no idea how this can happen but its great. Perhaps the Thrashers would get more fans if more of their players played with their jerseys over their heads.

Another Norwood Hockey Player Injured

This is just hard to believe. On Saturday sophomore Matt Brown suffered a severe neck injury and has since undergone spinal surgery at Children's Hospital. Unbelievably a second Norwood player was injured on Wednesday night in Milton. Senior Chris O'Brien crashed head first into the boards in what many spectators said was a nearly identical play to what happened to Brown. O'Brien was unconscious for several minutes and taken off the ice on a stretcher. He has since regained consciousness according to a Boston Globe article and is expected to make a full recovery.

I have never heard of anything like this before in any sport. Occasionally stories of paralyzed hockey or football players surface but I can't recall when a second teammate suffered a similar injury. Fortunately it doesn't seem like O'Brien's injury will have lasting effects and he is said to be alert and in good spirits. Brown has regained some feeling in his fingers and toes which has offered hope. As we said the two days before, the Sports Juke wishes a speedy recovery to both athletes.

Celtics Blow Another One

The Celtics last 3 losses have come after they held a significant lead in the ballgame. Tonight, Boston fell in Orlando, 96-94. Rashard Lewis layed in a bucket with 1.3 seconds left to cement the victory. The C's had a 13 point lead in the second quarter of this game, AND they had Dwight Howard in foul trouble - yet somehow they find a way to lose.

In their previous loss, at Detroit, the Celtics held an 8 point halftime lead. They were outscored by 14 in the final half, and fell 92-86.

And finally, the C's lost on their home court to the Dallas Mavericks on January 18th. In this game, Boston led by 11 points in this game. Unfortunately, a 14-0 Mavs run in the 4th quarter did them in.

This is not solid fundamental Celtics basketball. With KG on the court, you think that Boston would be able to seal up these games with tight defense. Usually, Boston can just frustrate teams in the paint. Unfortunately, tonight Howard and Marcin Gortat battled well for the Magic in the 2nd half, and took Boston out of their established flow. Disappointing tonight.

Now This Is A Blooper

Check out the skater at 24 seconds. She must be dead. I am not trying to sell Toyota vehicles, but some of these are funny. I like the ballerina one as well.

Ray Ray Gets Snubbed

Random Jesus Shuttlesworth Video.

Ray Allen will not be at the all-star game in Dallas this year. I don't think it helped that Ray said fan voting was stupid. Ray Ray, you gotta know when to shut your trap and when to speak out. You only say fan voting sucks when you are the last one voted in, and a reporter asks you about a big time snub. Your response to that question should be, "X is having a great year, and I shouldn't have been voted in ahead of him. I thank the fans for their support, but I think they made a mistake in this decision."

Instead, Jesus Shuttlesworth comes out a week before the vote is tallied and says that fans are ridiculous. Yes, they did vote AI as a starter, but that shouldn't be your concern. Here's ESPN's take on the snub: "Ray Allen Ray has been an All-Star nine out of the last ten years, and while 34-year-old wing players always slow down a little, it's not like he has fallen off a cliff in terms of productivity. It seems like Ray may be a victim of the rise of Rajon Rondo. The Celtics are good, but four All-Stars (Garnett and Pierce are in) is a very tall order. "

Very good analysis by ESPN, although they did forget to mention what a moron he is for speaking out.

Wilfork Blows It

The one thing Pats Nose Tackle Vince Wilfork had going for him in contract negotiations with the team was the rising fan and media sentiment in his favor. Chris Gasper of the Boston Globe and Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald both wrote columns in their respective paper today supporting Wilfork and telling the Patriots to pay up. Our own Middle Man Mike just wrote a column yesterday I agreed with stating the same thing.

But then today as he practices down in Miami for Sunday's pro-bowl, Wilfork told a local Florida newspaper that it would be his "dream come true" to play for Tampa or Miami, being that he is from Florida. Oh yea, there is nothing New England fans love more than having one of their players say they would love to play for another team(Sarcasm).

While the Patriots really have no reason to sign a long term deal with Wilfork seeing that they would save a load of money just franchising him, you were getting the feeling that if any time the Patriots franchise could be pressured by the fans and media into caving into a player, it might be now. The team is coming off their worst season since 2002 and they have already lost key veteran members of the defense in recent years. But then Wilfork goes and says something that is going to piss off the one bargaining chip he has in his corner. The fans. Nice job Vince.

"Let's Man Up And Get This Thing Right"

That's the attitude we need around here! Peter Chiarelli said those words to Pierre LeBrun during an interview with ESPN. Other notables from the conversation include PC vowing that he won't trade Toronto's #1 pick because "that pick is too valuable." When asked if firing Claude Julien is an option, Chiarelli said "No, it's never even entered my mind. We have to improve as a team, we have to improve as a management team, we have to improve as a coaching staff, and that's what we're going to do." Despite an article from the Globe's Kevin Paul Dupont citing that the Bruins were out of the running for Ilya Kovalchuk, a source close to the situation said the Bruins are in fact a front runner along with Los Angeles. And maybe PC hinted that a trade is on the horizon by saying "It's incumbent on the players to play better, because they haven't played well enough. By the same token, it may be that we need some tweaks. I'm looking every year [to make trades] but maybe more so this year because of the way we performed."

With the return of a healthy lineup on Friday (Savard, Sturm and Begin will all be back) this is the Bruins chance to actually prove if they have what it takes to win. And they will have to do it with Vezina-candidate Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres.

What? You Can't Do That?

I know its not legal, and I know he will probably get a suspension, but I still loved every second of it.

I Love This Video

The guy that made this video is Remi Gaillard. He has some great videos out there, I recommend this one and this one.

Djokovic Puking During Australian Open

Why do I show these things? I am sick myself, I guess. It just makes me laugh when people yak in front of ESPN camera. Jeez, I kind of feel sorry for this guy. How come he puked into a towel? To make it worse, he lost. I don't know who he is, but he fell to a guy named Tsonga. Tsongas Arena affiliaton?

Bring Back The Lifetime Ban!

NBA Commish David Stern decided today to suspend Wizards Guard Gilbert Arenas for the rest of the season. This wasn't a surprise and Arenas obviously deserves it. But is it just me, or was this a great time for David Stern to send a message to all NBA players and ban Arenas for life? Stern, based on past statements and policy changes, obviously strongly dislikes the culture of the NBA these days and could have sent a shock wave through the league that this behavior will be dealt with harshly. What does it say about the NBA that two teammates get into an altercation involving guns in an NBA locker room and the story was covered in the media more as a joke than a serious issue.

Besides, the lifetime ban is a lost art these days. We need to bring it back. Athletes used to get banned for life all the time. Shoeless Joe Jackson, Pete Rose, and more recently, Jose Offerman. It happens in International competition all the time. Someone losing their career is entertaining! It raises the stakes! Remember how awesome the "retirement matches" in the old WWE matches where the loser was forced to retire? Sure they would usually figure out a way to bring the guy back a few months later, but it was still fun. Besides, its not like these lifetime bans would actually be permanent. Stern could change his mind after Arenas plays for some Spanish or Greek team for a year or two. George Steinbrenner, Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle were all banned from baseball at one time but were reinstated. Just for the record, baseball isn't the only sport to ban players for life, they just seem to be the only ones willing to ban the people we have actually heard of. The NBA did ban some guy named Roy Tarpley once. Tarpley then sued the league saying his ban for drug addiction violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. That son of a bitch!

Pay The Man

Vince Wilfork is very unhappy that he might be slapped with the franchise tag. Gotta say, if you are a football player at the end of a rookie contract, expect the possibility of the franchise tag. Wilfork has always been a free speaker, and now he is speaking out against management pegging him with the franchise tag. Every player who gets 'the tag,' insert Debbie Downer 'wah wah' sound, gets angry. But, that is the nature of the game.

The only reason these big timers speak out is to get a lengthy multi million dollar deal. 'The Tag' is not disrespectful, because 'the tag' gives a player the average of the top 5 salaries at the players' respective position. So, Wilfork is set to make a hell of a payday. Unfortunately, if Vince blows out his knee next year, it could be his last contract. It is understandable that he would be upset getting hit with 'the tag,' wah wah.

The only problem with not giving Vince a big deal, is the possibility that he might take it easy next year, or possibly sit out. You can't have the big guy upset...especially when he is the key cog in your defense. The Patriots have huge problems right now stopping the run (did you see the Ravens game?), and Vince is one of the few dependable players on that side of the ball.

So, a quandary for New England. What should the Patriots do? Pay the man for a few years, or pay him for one year? But remember, if you pay him for one year, he might not be on your squad the next year.

Norwood Hockey Player Injured

A sophomore on the Norwood Mustang's hockey team, Matt Brown, suffered a spinal injury Saturday night. According to an article in the Boston Globe Brown does not have feeling in his legs. It is possible that he will go into surgery today at Children's Hospital and his prognosis is currently not known.

As someone who played hockey my whole life this is something that always scared me. Ever since Travis Roy was injured I hated to skate towards the boards knowing there was another player behind me. In Matt's case it sounds like the hit wasn't intentional and was purely accidental. The Sports Juke wishes Matt a speedy recovery.

Sorry Dennis Wideman

I have been reading over the last week of our sports blog posts, and we seem to be singling out Dennis Wideman. I think all of our Wideman bashing has been a bit much. He doesn't really deserve this kind of coverage. Why can't he just get back to the way he used to play?

To amend for The Juke's horrific coverage of Wideman, we urge fans to visit his Fanspace/Myspace page. Be a fan!

Superbowl Champions? Yea But....

I keep hearing all these sports pundits on TV and radio saying how the Colts HAVE to win the Superbowl because that is the only way they won't look like fools for tanking the final two games and resting their starters. This couldn't be farther from the truth. If the Colts win the Superbowl next Sunday, it would only make GM Bill "no the other Bill" Polian and the entire Colts organization look like bigger idiots for not going for the undefeated season. If the Colts lost to the Jets for the second time on Sunday, then you could easily make the argument that they just weren't good enough to complete the undefeated feat. But if the Colts beat the Saints, the only blemishes on their record will be those two tank jobs in week 16 and 17. You can't tell me that if Peyton wins his second Superbowl that he will not be thinking in the back of his mind, hell, even the front of his mind about the fact that his team could have went 19-0 and claimed immortality.

Not only that, but they would have been able to accomplish something that their bitter rivals the Patriots weren't able to accomplish. The Colts would be considered the team of the decade. Manning, being the leader of the team, would have secured his place as the best QB of his era, probably of all-time. Get real Pats fans...national NFL fans will not give a crap that Brady has won three superbowls and Manning has only won two. That isn't a big difference when you look at all the numbers. We can't hold on to that forever.

So the Colts are going to play next Sunday to just win the Superbowl. They must be pumped for that!

Give Wakefield The Ball...Until The Playoffs

Tim Wakefield wants to be a starter for the Red Sox for the upcoming season. I'll tell you what Tim, you can have the ball from April until September, and then sit out the rest of the season with a back injury. I think that is a good trade-off. Wakefield is one hell-of-a pitcher during the summer months. Unfortunately, that always seems to take a toll on him.

This is from Tim today in the Herald: "I did make the All-Star team last year. It seems every year, and I don’t know why, my name gets brought up like this when I don’t feel I need to prove myself every day. I don’t know where the rumors are coming from, but I try not to pay attention. I know my role and I know what my approach is going to be when I get to spring training: be a starter and help us win the World Series." I think Tim means to say, "help us win the AL East, because I don't pitch in October."

Timmy, for our sake please don't speak out like this. The Red Sox have been damn good to you over the years. Allowing you to start, relieve, close, and sit out the playoffs. Many teams would get rid of you for not playing in the postseason, but the Sox have loyalty to you. Just shut up, and pitch for us for 5 months.

"Introducing From Lousiana State University, Give It Up For Uno-Uno!"

So Big Baby is no longer Big Baby. The Celtic will now go by "Uno-Uno"in reference to his jersey number. Reminds me a lot of Chad Johnson, err, I mean Ocho Cinco. I think this is a dumb idea but it's no surprise coming from Glen Davis with the way he has been acting.

Check out this line: "This season's been a huge character builder for me." He said that right before yelling "Suck my dick."

Celtics Court A Bit Slippery

Here are highlights from last night's win against the Clippers. Couple of things from these highlights :

1)It shows how slick the court was last night. Ray Allen almost pulled a Wes Welker. How come The Garden can't figure this out? At least once a year the courts are slippery because of the condensation from the heat in the air and the ice underneath the floor.

2)How did the Baron Davis shot go in? I watched it like 4 times, and I still don't know how he did it. Did he switch hands? Did he travel? Did he do all of this in mid-air?

3)Kevin Garnett looked very good in these highlights. You would have expected him to play with a sense of caution, because of what a slippery floor could do to his knee. To my surprise, he was making hard cuts, jump passes, and strong pivots. We here at Boston's best sports blog think that this is a huge sign of good times ahead for the C's.

How Much Will Kovi Cost?

The speculation has been heating up that the Bruins will make an offer to Atlanta's stud forward Ilya Kovalchuk. Here's my take on it: I am all for it as long as it doesn't result in trading Toronto's #1 pick, Zdeno Chara, Marc Savard or Tuukka Rask. Everyone else on the roster is expendable in my opinion. Yes, that means you Milan Lucic.

Ilya Kovalchuk is the type of player that will give the Bruins a much needed scoring threat. But there is no reason to pull the trigger on the deal now. The Bruins most certainly won't win the Stanley Cup this season and are even in danger of missing the playoffs. Let's not sell the farm on a lost season. The most important thing Peter Chiarelli can do is to see what this squad can do when healthy. If the team is still a disaster after the Olympic break then they can make a move. Unless a miracle happens, the decision to trade should be used to improve next year's team.

PC would be crazy to let go of Rask, Chara or Toronto's pick. Rask is the the type of player that you pray to land in your lap. Without Chara the Bruins defense would be crippled for years. And Toronto's first round draft pick could very easily turn into a star player (Taylor Hall please) that will benefit for years to come. But if a deal can be worked out to send Blake Wheeler, David Krejci, Milan Lucic, Tim Thomas or even the Bruins first round selection then I am all for it.

On another note, check out this quote from Dennis Wideman from The Boston Globe:

Even the star-crossed Wideman, who took a puck in the mouth Sunday, reported no significant damage. When noted that he didn’t miss a shift after eating the puck, Wideman deadpanned, “Why would I go out? I had to be on the ice for another goal against.’’

No Sugery For Brady

Apparently the injuries that Brady suffered through the course of this past season won't require any surgery. It was rumored that he had three broken ribs and a broken finger on his throwing hand but they will heal with rest. Tom backed out of the Pro Bowl last week (I can't believe he made it honestly). All this means to me is that he better be ready for next season and not put out another performance like he did against the Ravens. I truly believe that this next season will determine the next few years for the Patriots. We will learn if they will be contenders for years to come or its officially rebuilding mode.

Blindfolded Half Court Shot, Prank Gone Wrong

Pretty sick shot I would say. Apparently, this was supposed to be a prank. From Kansascity.com: "Reminiscent of the hijinks CollegeHumor.com pulled at a Maryland men’s basketball game last March, Branstrom(the coach of a High School bball team) was blindfolded in front of the entire student body and told that he’d win Final Four tickets if he made a half-court shot.

The catch is that the students were told to cheer wildly when Branstrom presumably missed the shot, hoping to dupe him into thinking he’d won tickets when, in fact, he hadn’t."

Now that is a funny prank gone wrong. Here's a link to the video (sorry I can't post it. Something is wrong with my net.) halfcourt heave

UPDATE BY GUY IN THE BALCONY: First off the link doesn't work so don't bother clicking on it. Secondly, and what Middle Man Mike failed to mention, is that the guy actually made the shot. All he got out of it was a gift certificate to a Mexican restaurant.

UPDATED BY MIDDLE MAN MIKE:Yep, this post was a total loss. Here's the actual video...

Bruins Should Tank On Purpose

The Boston Bruins are on the right track, as they let my Carolina Hurricanes (working in NC for the next month!) win 5-1 on Sunday. This is big for the Bruins, as they are seemingly ready to tank the rest of the season to finish as cellar dwellers. Boston currently is ranked 20th in the 30 team NHL. However, they are only 2 points away from being the 26th ranked team.

Boston gets Toronto's first round pick in the upcoming draft - currently Toronto is 28th, 5 points up on Carolina. That is why it is in the B's best interest to throw in the towel. Throw it in just like the Cavs did to get Lebron. For the remainder of the season, the Bruins main goal should be to cut payroll and play youngsters. Tuuka Rask should start the remainder of the season in net. If the B's trim payroll, they could make plays for game changers such as: Center: Patrick Marleau (35 goals, 22 assists) and/or Left Winger: Ilya Kovalchuk (30 goals, 26 assists). Couple one of these guys with a couple of high draft picks, and we might have ourselves a contender.

Last season was exciting. This season is not. The B's should do us all a favor, and lose out. That way, the next 10 seasons might be worth watching.

Great Vikings Radio Audio

I could listen to this all day. The final 10 seconds are the best.

One More Funny Favre Moment

Right after the Vikings game concluded, this ad popped up on my screen. I was laughing my ass off. Good for Sears - make some money off of Brett Favre's dumbness. I really can't handle another offseason of this 'Will Favre return?' talk. That will drive me nuts.

Vikings Should Have Won, Favre Blew It...Again

The Minnesota Vikings gave the New Orleans Saints the NFC Championship game. A few things to think about:

*Minnesota outgained New Orleans 475 yards to 257 yards. That's nearly a 2-1 margin. Thru 4 quarters it was 475 to 235. That's more than 2-1.

*Minnesota fumbled the ball 6 times! 6 times! Now, granted they only lost 3 of them...Still, it must have made everyone on the team tense. Anytime I saw a Viking RB go into a pile, I just assumed they were going to fumble. I can only assume that Minnesota players were scared to make another mistake. That is not the mind set you want in a conference championship game.

*Brett Favre threw 2 picks, including the worst pick I have seen since his pick in the Giants/Packers NFC Championship. I think this is what Favre wanted to do with that rollout yesterday -

I am not a smart guy, but if I were in the same position, rolling out with 10 yards of freedom in front of me, I think I would have turned on the jets and slid down. Would have been a FG under 50 yards if he would have just made the simple play. Unfortunately, Brett marches to the beat of his own drum, and thus made a play only FAVRE would make. Typical Favre!

*Finally, Favre probably thought he had to make a play because the Vikes were charged a penalty for 12 men in the huddle. Inexplicable. Even more inexplicable, because the Vikings only had 5 penalties on the day. Couldn't have been a worse sequence of events for Minnesota. Penalty, INT, Coin toss, allow 4th down conversion, FG to win. Would suck to be a Minnesota fan today.

Hey Brett, nice INT with a chance to go to the Super Bowl. I highly enjoyed that your last pass in the NFL was a pick...until you un-retire in August.

Pierre Garcon Using The Deaths Of 100,000 People For Motivation

During today's AFC Championship game between the Jets and Colts, CBS's Jim Nantz said Pierre Garcon was using the earthquake in Haiti as motivation to win the game. The Colts WR is from Haiti and he has family affected by the natural disaster. But what does it even mean that he us using it as motivation? Is he trying harder because a lot of people died? Is he going to run faster and catch the ball better because Haiti was destroyed? I don't get it. I guess that's what makes these guy athletes and me a blog writer. Maybe the reason I never got past Batnams in hockey was because I couldn't find enough motivation to not put the puck in my own net in overtime. Oops.

Merrimack Beats Providence in OT

It took a while but the Warriors have finally earned a win. Brandon Brodhag's overtime winner gave Merrimack their first home win in seven weeks as they defeated Providence College 2-1. Sophomore Carter Madsen had the Warriors first goal. Andrew Braithwaite earned his fifth win of the season. Here is how Hockey East is shaping up as we near the home stretch:

1. New Hampshire 25 pts
2. Massachusetts 20 pts
Boston College 20 pts
4. Umass- Lowell 18 pts
5. Maine 17 pts
6. Boston U. 14 pts
7. Northeastern 13 pts
8. Vermont 12 pts
9. Merrimack 10 pts
10. Providence 9 pts

The Bad News Bears

Sure, they are only a point out of 8th place. But they are also only two points out of 13th place. Forget about Toronto's draft picks, their own draft picks are looking a lot better now. Bruins fans have been hitting the radio waves with the same old Bruins fans cliches, "Not tough enough"..."Teams dont fear them in their own barn"..."Where is the passion?". I have one, maybe they can't score enough goals? Bruins are averaging just under two goals a game in January.

Yea they have had some injuries, but Lucic and Bergeron are both back now and nothing has changed. Besides, they lost to last place Columbus at home the other night. If the Patriots lost to the Rams at home would you be blaming the injuries?

Also, just throwing this out there. Why is no one placing any blame on Julien? I know Chiarelli and Julien are bunk buddies and Chiarelli gave him an extension the first chance he got, but the team has performed well below expectations ever since the Carolina series last year. If the Bruins continue to bottom out, is his job in jeopardy? It is not like he is some Stanley Cup winning coach with a great reputation and deserves the benefit of the doubt. In fact, one team actually fired him right before the playoffs began they didn't trust him that much.

NFL Conference Championship Predictions

AFC:
The Jets hae been on a miraculous ride, and it all started when the Colts gave up to them in week 16. Peyton Manning and the rest of the starters took a seat, and the Jets defense got to the Colts backup QB, all while earning an important victory. After taking care of the listless Bungals in week 17, the NY Jets were heading to the playoffs, thanks two teams that gave up.

This week, it is a different story. Indianapolis won't be pulling Manning, Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. They will keep their starting D-Line in for four quarters. The Colts will put up points because that is what they do. Manning is too good, and has picked apart the Jets far too many times to think that he will be stopped on Sunday.

That being said, the Jets are playing tremendous defense. They shut down the Bungals and Chargers, now they will have to pray for that same success against Indy. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen. They will certainly play well in the trenches, potentially thwarting Indy's ground game. Still, Manning will put up 17...at the least. If the Jets can hold the Colts to 17 points, then they have succeeded. The only problem is that the Jets offense will not put up 17 against the Colts.
Indy's defense is lightning fast, and they already caused issues for Mark Sanchez dating back to week 16. The starters held him in check for the first half of the game, unfortunately once the team gave up, Sanchez and the Jets put up 19 straight points. However, this Colts defense is a group of savy veterans, a with Super Bowl experience. I would be very, and I mean VERY, surprised if they didn't stop Sanchez and the Jets.

The Jets may run for a pair of tds tomorrow, but don't expect Sanchez to throw any 6 pointers. Colts 24-Jets 14

NFC:

Could be one of the more exciting NFC Championship games we will see. The Viking are led by some quarterback I have never heard of...apparently he is having a great year and more than fantastic postseason. Drew Brees of the Saints, is in the biggest game of his life. Trying to prove to all doubters that he can turn this once bum franchise, into a Super Bowl winner. Unfortunately, the Saints run to the title will be thwarted by a guy who starred in There's Something About Mary...also the top ranked pass rush will play a factor.

We all know that these quarterbacks have more than enough firepower to put up big-time offensive numbers. Both QBs have a wealth of receivers and running backs. (Somehow I think we have forgotten about Adrian Peterson in all this QB hype!) But the deciding factor in the game will be defense. The Saints have been spotty throughout the season with their defense. Last week was a perfect example - as they gave up huge 1st quarter plays to Arizona, only to play a tremendous 2nd half. Jekyll and Hyde type defense is a great way to describe them. Minnesota's defense, on the other hand, seems to play complete games week-in and week-out. They will have their hands full against the plethora of New Orleans' wide receivers, but they will find a way to get to Brees in the end. Onto the super bowl goes #4. Isn't he supposed to be Aaron Rogers' backup?
Vikings 34-Saints 27

Congrats To The NBA For Doing Something Right

Ten players last night donated $1,000 dollars to Haiti for every point they scored due to the aftermath of last week's earthquake . I am normally one to rip apart the NBA so I will give credit when its due. This was a smart and generous idea for the players who participated. It makes my $25 donation look like shit. Oh well, without further ado, here is a list of the players who donated:

Pau Gasol
Derrick Rose
Joe Johnson
Tyreke Evans
Spencer Hawes
Antawn Jamison
Mike Miller
Mike Dunleavy
Russel Westbrook
And the Celtics Kendrick Perkins.

Merrimack Loses Again

Merrimack lost to #19 UMASS-Lowell last night 5-4. The weird thing about this Merrimack season is that they keep losing but they are turning into an offensive powerhouse. They can score but they can't keep the puck out of their own net. Freshman Stephane Da Costa is proving he can play at the collegiate level; he has earned Freshman of the Month award three times this season.

Another Idiot Goes To Jail

Champions Tour golfer Jim Thorpe will spend a year in prison for failing to pay $2 million dollars in income tax. The golfer will also get two years of supervised release, a period in which he is expected to pay back the tax money he withheld.

Thorpe has won 13 times, including 1 major, on the Champions Tour. During his time with the PGA, he has earned more than $13 million dollars. Kind of have a hard time feeling bad for a guy who made that kind of cash, and failed to pay taxes. I pay my taxes, and I don't make enough to live in Somerville. It will also be a bit sad if Thorpe spends a year in prison for tax evasion, and Gilbert Arenas walks free after pointing a gun at somebody. We live in a crazy world.

Big Baby Sucks Dick In Celtics Win

The Sports Juke, aka the Best Sports Blog In Boston, can't stop with the Glen Davis jokes. They aren't getting old to us.

The nearly healthy Celtics squeaked by the depleted Trailblazers 98-95 in OT tonight. KG returned to action and gave the Cs 13 points and 4 rebounds on 4-9 shooting. Glen Davis, one game after his S My D tirade, pumped in 2 and committed 1 turnover in 18 minutes of action. Portland played without Brandon Roy, Joel Przybilla and Greg Oden. They started a 3rd string center - which indicates how bad Boston actually played.

Boston looked shaky once again tonight, blowing an 11 point lead, including a 5 point lead after 3 quarters. Ray Allen hit the game winner in OT, a 3 pointer with 42 seconds left.

Next up for Boston, LA Clippers in the Garden on Monday.

Glen Davis Telling Like It Is

Usually when you yell "suck my dick" and pay $25,000 you get a night full of hot girls and great stories. In Big Baby's case he just got some bad publicity and a huge fine.

Feel Good Story Of The Day

Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich returned to practice this week for the first since being diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma in the spring. The disease often requires amputation of the affected limb but chemotherapy was successful in treating the tumor. Herzlich was a projected to be a first round round NFL draft choice with potential to be drafted in the top five.

Curt Is Getting Mad

Curt Schilling took his blog, 38 pitches, off of WEEIs website. Schilling has also said that he will no longer appear on WEEI - that is until Pete Sheppard is back on the air. 98.5 The Sports Hub blatantly recognized the dispute that Schilling is having with WEEI, at one point saying that he is more than welcome to call their station. Gary Tanguay and Scott Zolak are making their push to get him on 98.5. With the way things have been going for The Hub recently, would you be surprised if #38 started calling in?

Everything has gone wrong for WEEI this week, and to tell you the truth, their programming doesn't sound fantastic right now. 98.5 seems more interesting, fresher, and full of energy. 850 is merely same-old, same-old.

Awful Call

It wasn't Lucic's stick, it was Anton Stralman's stick. Nice call ref.

“I was just going to the net,’’ said Lucic. “The puck was free, so I was trying to dig the puck out. I think all their guys in front of the net were trying to lift my stick. I felt like my stick was on the ice the whole time.

Milan Lucic Up And Down

Last night, Milan Lucic made me happy, then pissed me off. Here's what happened in the 1st. Good stuff by Lucic, finally the team shows some heart:

Then the Bruins collapsed. This is a pretty solid video, from the Columbus announcers. They do a pretty good job. In this video, B's score right off the bat. At 1:25 of the video, Dennis Wideman sucks. At 3:25 Bergeron wrists one in for a 2-1 lead. At 5 minutes into the video, the Jackets score to tie it up...coming off another B's turnover! They don't show the Lucic penalty with 1:30 left in the game, but they do show the Jackets game winner at 6:15 into the video.

Pete Caroll Packing For Seattle

Thanks to Andrew for the tip.

I...Love...Rasheed

If Tommy Heinsohn still did the 'I....Love...Whomever' phrase, I would nominate Rasheed to be in 'Walters' place. Sheed is awesome. Not only is he effective on the court, but he is stirs the pot off the court. After the Celtics loss to the Mavs a few nights ago, Wallace said, "The officials don't like tough defense on Dirk Nowtizki, so, of course, I get a whole lot of fucking calls...That's how the story goes, I'm not worried about it. We'll see them again."

Oh Rasheed. If I were a ref I would 'T' him up! It's true what he said though. Dirk gets every tickytack call, although he is a monster. If you are 5'9, then give him some help. If you are nearly 7 feet, let the guy just play.

Detroit Fans Suck

Glen Davis may face disciplinary action from the NBA after yelling an obscenity at a fan last night. During the second quarter Davis yelled "Suck my dick!" to a guy in an Ohio State jersey sitting behind the Celtics bench. But here's the thing: The fan, Scott Zack, had been heckling Big Baby and had been warned by the arena's security to stop. Zack, who was sitting behind the Celtics bench, yelled "fat boy" and "chubbs" at Davis. Even after Davis yelled at him, and being told again to stop heckling him by security, he continued yelling at Davis for the remainder of the game.

Now obviously Big Baby has to be responsible for what he said. But if a fan is sitting within arm's reach of players and is yelling at them what do people think is going to happen? The warning issued by the security at The Palace clearly indicates that the fan was the instigator. The guy should have been moved before he had the opportunity to get Davis going even more. Jeez, you think they would have learned after the Ron Artest incident.

Doc said he won't punish Davis but the league might. "(If he said something back) then, shame on Glen," Rivers said. "To the victors go the spoils. I tell our guys all the time, you lose a game they have every right to yell, say whatever they want and you've got to be strong enough to walk away. So that's not the fans fault, no matter what he said. We know about it. We've got to walk off the floor. So it's that what happened, then shame on Glen Davis."

Carey Price Gets Demolished!

There is nothing better as a Bruins fan then watching a Montreal Canadien getting laid out. It's even better when that Canadien is Carey Price. Enjoy.

Pete Sheppard Fired From WEEI

Pete 'The Meat' Sheppard was fired by Entercom today, and thus will no longer be part of the 'Big Show' on WEEI. In a statement released by entercom: “As we continue to operate in challenging economic times, it is with regret that we announce today that we have eliminated Pete Sheppard’s position as sports anchor on "The Big Show."

Sheppard has been at WEEI since 1994, so this is a big blow for their programming. One of two things happened here:
1) Entercom is losing money at WEEI, and needed to trim some 'fat,' pun intended. So, they got rid of Sheppard's big time deal.

2) Entercom didn't have the money to pay Sheppard - money that 98.5 most certainly does. There is part of me that thinks that 98.5 gave The Meat Man some indication that he could make some big bucks at The Sports Hub. Upon hearing this, he probably asked Entercom for some $$, in which they responded by cutting him loose.

Either way, people around Boston have a love/hate thing going on with Pete. He will certainly catch on somewhere else, and will probably get his own talk show or tv show from this (more likely radio, he is made for radio!). He is great with callers, and often tells them to shut their 'pie hole' and to 'stop being a turd.'

The Big Show will continue to operate as usual, as The Big O certainly can handle things on his own. Additionally, during football season he has a great complimentary crew of Fred Smerlas and Steve DeOssie to help carry the load. As for the rest of the year, the shows aren't as exciting during the Spring and Summer. But since fans don't get sick of the Red Sox, they will certainly get their huge load of phone calls which will allow their program to continue flourishing.

All of this being said: Aren't we all quite impressed with what 98.5 has been able to do. I mean, seriously! Who expected them to come into this market and start delivering blows on the station that has ruled the city for the last 15 years.

Get Me One Now!

Just to let everyone know my birthday is about a month away. Can't figure out what to get me? I will gladly accept the Zamboni vacuum cleaner! This has to be the greatest vacuum cleaner ever invented. It shits all over the Dyson ball vacuum cleaner in so many ways that I don't even have enough room to list them all. Plus it's lighter than an Oreck! Imagine the following scenario: I get crumbs all over my desk from my Italian sub. What to do? I could just brush them aside but that's no fun. I think I'll use my Zamboni to suck them up instead!

Is there any way we get Billy Mays back so he can't start marketing this? I'm sure it will be a top seller if the man in the blue shirt could've had a say in it.

I also laugh at farts and guys getting kicked in the nuts.

Debate It: WEEI Or The Sports Hub?

Man From The Chair: WEEI has been the leader in radio ratings for a decade now because they know what they are doing and they know what sports fans like. Many other sports radio stations have started up in this area and tried to challenge EEI, but to no avail. Middle Man Mike, our own blogger, knows this first hand when he worked for 1510 The Zone. He no longer works for them and they are no longer in business. Mike was so embarrassed by this situation that he exiled himself to the Carolinas.

WEEI has an all-star lineup of talent. Starting with Dennis and Callahan in the morning. Now personally, I cant stand these two. I'm liberal and these two are hardcore Republicans. But the facts dont lie and the they are the number one rated morning drive team in the country. They give a good balance of sports and current events. Then comes Dale Arnold and Michael Holley. I wish Dale Arnold would quit because his voice is annoying and makes me want to rip out my ears but Holley easily makes up for this with his humor and sports knowledge. Then theres the Big Show, named after the fatness of the show's host. What makes this show great is the mixing of personalities this show has. It starts with a great host, Glen Ordway. The resident homer and everyman Pete Sheppard. Then a rotating lineup of local sports jocks and celebrities usually featuring Lou Merloni, Fred Smerlas, and Steve Deossie. Now these guys are your classic jocks, pig-headed and arrogant, but they also know their sports and give a good players perspective.

850 AM knows how to draw an audience. They are often crticized for berating and talking down their callers. But you know what? When you are talking sports with your friends, are you talking at a polite volume level and giving each other turns? No way. You are belitting their arguments and making fun of them for even having their opinions. They also talk about what the fans want to talk about. . Some Celtics. Mostly Pats and Red Sox. And most importantly, no Bruins whatsoever. The perfect formula. This has definitely been key to their ratings.

Guy In The Balcony: So while The Sportshub is giving WEEI is biggest challenge since its inception, that is fine with them. A little competition didn't hurt anything and will force the station to strive to be an even more entertaining sports station than they already are.

In August the channel formerly known as Mix 98.5 became The Sports Hub, “Boston’s new home for sports.” With its arrival came the departure of WEEI’s grip in the radio sports market. The first thing that separates the Sports Hub from its competitors is that it is heard on an FM frequency. That means you can get a quality signal just about anywhere in the greater Boston area. No more static and no more losing the signal as you go into a tunnel or over a bridge. Just pure radio talk.

The talent on The Sports Hub is superior to WEEI. The morning drive is hosted by former WBCN jocks Toucher and Rich. The pair are funny, not racists, and are more in-tune with Boston than Dennis and Callahan. And they actually talk about sports. The midday show is hosted by Gary Tanguay and Scott Zolak. One is a media member and the latter a former Patriot quarterback. They are good hosts and easy to listen to. The pair are head and shoulders above Ned Flanders…oops, I mean Dale Arnold. The afternoon drive brings on Felger and Maz. Felger is a Wisconsin native and provides great insight from an outsider’s perspective. He doesn’t see the Patriots as perfect as everyone else does and he will let you know. Maz is one of the most knowledgable baseball members in the media and is great when it comes to talking Sox.

One of the best parts of the Sports Hub is the callers. The days are long gone of having to listen to callers yell about ridiculous trade ideas that worked in their fantasy leagues. We no longer have to hear bickering between Pete Sheppard and everyone else. Callers aren’t “blown up” and get this, their opinions are actually respected!

Since the inception of 98.5 The Sports Hub my radio only visits the AM dial so I can listen to traffic reports. Now I get to listen to the Bruins on crystal clear, static-free frequency as they blow another game.

Barry Melrose Talks Bruins

He is dead on. Since the injuries I've felt that if the Bruins can maintain some level of adequacy then they still have a chance to do some damage when they get healthy. But as of right now the offense is sputtering and the powerplay is killing them. They look tired and worn down. We saw what they were capable of last season. I feel that the only thing we can hope for now is once the team gets healthy the Bruins can get a spark and go on a run. If not, it will be one and done.

Fisk Lays Into McGwire

Known for his passion, Carlton Fisk had a fiery interview with the Chicago Tribune about Mark McGwire that came out today. In case you've been living under a rock for the past week, McGwire admitted to steroid use during his record-breaking 1998 season. Some highlights from the interview:

On McGwire's claim that it doesn't help hand-eye coordination: "Well, of course it does. It allows you more acuity physically and mentally and optically. You are going to be stronger and you are going to be better." (Editor's note: Optically better?)

On inflation of player's statistics that use PED's: "Some of these numbers that are out there are really warped. Should they be considered? You saw how McGwire was viewed in the Hall of Fame voting. If you take the length of time that [steroid users] use that stuff and subtract 15 or 20 home runs a year for those guys, where are their numbers then?"

On McGwire saying PED's don't help HR totals: "That's a crock. There's a reason they call it performance-enhancing drugs. That's what it does -- performance enhancement. You can be good, but it's going to make you better. You can be average, but it is going to make you good. If you are below average, it is going to make you average. Some guys who went that route got their five-year, $35 million contracts and now are off into the sunset somewhere. Because once they can't use [steroids] anymore, they can't play anymore. Try having your knees operated on and catching for 30 years," Fisk added. "Do you think you feel good when you go out there? [McGwire] had to stand around and play first base. So excuuuuuse me."

On Roger Clemens: "The reason he got let go from the Red Sox was because he was starting to break down. His last couple of years in Boston just weren't very productive, a la 'The Rocket.' Then all of a sudden he goes to Toronto and he wants to show somebody something. Then he gets two consecutive Cy Young Awards [in '97 and '98]. Come on, give me a bucket."

On players who don't use steroids: "It's obvious to players. You notice that stuff. You know how hard it is to play the game. You know how hard it is to be productive at any age, but especially at an older age. You see guys who are as productive later on as they were early [in their careers]. It offends guys that stayed clean."

Can I Have Both?

Sox Sign Papelbon

The Sox avoided arbitration today with the signing of Jonathan Papelbon. The deal is worth $9.35 million for one year.

Why Is Tiger Woods In Sex Addiction Clinic

Why the hell is Tiger in a sex addiction clinic in Mississippi? If he is the benchmark for having a sex addiction, than every guy I know should be joining him in the facility. The only difference between Tiger and every other man is that he can get whoever he wants - the rest of us just lust after hot women. We would all do these women too, that is if we could get them to talk with us!

The only reason Tiger is in these clinics is for his self image. He knows that if he goes to these clinics and says 'I have a problem', then people/sponsors will forgive him. Sick bastard. I have lost respect for him. Tiger hadn't lost my respect for cheating on his wife 1000 times, but this 'self image promotion' stuff is really bothersome.

Boston Riddled With Injuries

There must be something in the water. Every team in Boston has significant injuries. Every...single...one. It is frustrating. We are living in a period here where all four of our major sports teams have the opportunity to be champions. Unfortunately, injuries have plagued many of our franchises. Let's take a look at some of these injuries:

New England Patriots: The Pats lost Wes Welker in their final regular season game. Welker, the leading receiver in the NFL was Brady's #1 option. Welker's replacement, Julian Edelman, performed well in his postseason debut, however Brady was not as comfortable as usual. Some of this discomfort was certainly due to Welker's absense.

Boston Bruins: The Bruins have been riddled with injuries this season. They are barely staying afloat in the East, and hopefully some of their stars will be returning soon. Patrice Bergeron just made an appearance last night after fracturing his thumb. That injury will hurt him all year. But that's just the start of Boston's injury woes. Here's a list of injuries that have cost the Bs games: Marc Savard (knee), Andrew Ference (groin, on IR), Mark Stuart just came back after missing 13 games, David Krejci and Marco Sturm missed the Kings game, Dennis Wideman was scratched against LA, and Steve Begin came out of the LA game injured.

Boston Celtics: Kevin Garnett has been out for several weeks now because of a hyperextended knee. During his absence the Celtics have gone 4-6. Not good. Doubley not good that his knee is acting up again. We all know what happened last year in the postseason without KG. Additional injuries: Marquis Daniels has been out for 19 games with a sprained thumb, Rasheed Wallace just came back from a 3 game absence, and Big Baby is still finding his legs after starting the season on the injured list stemming from his shirtless fight with a former college teammate.

Boston Red Sox: The season hasn't even started, and we are talking injury. Mike Lowell has a thumb injury, which means he can't even be traded. Dice K lied last year about an injury he suffered getting ready for the WBC, I wonder what he is hiding this year.

Jets Aren't So Bad

I was rooting for the New York Jets when they were in San Diego on Sunday. It is the first time I have ever rooted for a team from the Big Apple, hopefully the last time as well. I felt like a dirt bag inside, because I am a Bostonian who wanted NY to win. Am I going to hell for this?

I have no reason to dislike the Jets, except for their home address. Their players work hard, and none of them are pricks. Their coach is fiery and all about winning...what's not to like? They don't have an annoying player on the team. They don't have any old Patriots of importance, like Ty Law. Loud mouth Keyshawn Johnson doesn't call NY his home anymore. This team, dare I say it, is kind of lovable.

This Sunday, I will certainly be rooting for the New York Jets, over the Indy Colts. The Colts, a team filled with a plethora of players we all hate, are a prime example of a detestable team. Peyton Manning (jeez, enough said), Reggie Wayne and his kick ass receiving skills, Dwight Freeney burning the Pats o-line left and right, Dallas Clark is always open, and on-and-on we go.

The NY Jets have a rookie qb, a fast and exciting defense, and an interesting (to say the least) coach. I like them. Get mad at me if you must. I hope they win against Indy, and then they better lose to the Saints/Vikings in the Super Bowl. NY doesn't need another title team.

The Jets might not make me mad, but I don't want New Yorkers to have the thrill of winning the Bowl. As the Standells would say, 'Boston You're My Home.'

Kessel Trade Benefits Bruins

From The Hockey News by Brian Costello:Imagine the buzz in Toronto today had the Maple Leafs not foolishly traded away their first round pick in the 2010 draft?

They’d be talking about possibly getting that first overall pick. They’d be talking about Taylor Hall. They’d be talking about the bright side of a rebuilding project that has been spinning its wheels since the lockout. They’d be talking about hope.

Instead there’s panic and embarrassment imagining the likelihood of the Maple Leafs conceivably finishing last overall – or among the bottom five – and winning the lottery for first overall pick, then handing it over to the Boston Bruins as the first installment in return for Phil Kessel.

For Toronto, the Kessel trade was flawed from the second it was proposed. There was no chance he was going to lead the Leafs into a playoff spot this year and even if he’s somehow able to lift the team into 21st or 22nd or 23rd, it means the Leafs are giving up a prime pick this year (and next) and a second-rounder to boot. Remember all the buzz and excitement and kernels of hope last year’s seventh overall pick Nazem Kadri created in Toronto last June and during the World Junior Championship? Toronto gave two more of those away.

How’s a team supposed to rebuild without young, cheap talent coming down the pipeline? A colleague argued Toronto could afford to give up the valuable first round picks because it had signed Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson as free agents and they are effectively de facto first-rounders. Shame on the person who thinks a rebuilding team can give up any early draft picks.

The point was made after the Kessel trade in September that the Leafs shouldn’t be going after restricted free agents or trades such as these. The compensation is just too steep. Why not wait for a peach of an unrestricted free agent such as Ilya Kovalchuk instead? No compensation whatsoever. Then supplement him on the roster with those early picks that are kept.

It’s such a shame the Leafs were seduced by Kessel’s age (21) and upside (40-goal potential). But they gave away the future to get him.

And I don’t for a second buy the notion the Leafs didn’t anticipate the first round pick this year being any higher than 15th or so. This team was doomed to miss the playoffs from the get-go. Our panel of experts picked Toronto for 11th in the East and I thought that was generous.

Now 28th overall in the NHL, I wonder if the Leafs have really under-achieved or if this is what should have been expected. Offensively, five of their top eight forwards have over-achieved. Matt Stajan (on pace for 21 goals this season versus career average of 15), Alexei Ponikarovsky (25 versus 19), Niklas Hagman (27 versus 15), Lee Stempniak (21 versus 19) and Kessel (26 versus 24) are all scoring above their career averages. Jason Blake (on pace for 16 this season versus career average of 21) and Mikhail Grabovski (12 versus 18) are a little below their career averages and Nikolai Kulemin at the same pace as last season (15).

In goal, Vesa Toskala’s numbers have slipped to below mediocre, but that has been the concern for two years. That really shouldn’t have come as a surprise. And Jonas Gustavsson has been about as good as expected in his first NHL season.

So it’s GM Brian Burke’s hand-picked defense that has pushed Toronto 10 teams down on the NHL power rankings? Francois Beauchemin is the big minute-muncher and has been getting better after a slow start. Tomas Kaberle and Ian White are having career years.

Who was it again that was expecting this Toronto team to be much better?

It all comes back to the steep price the team paid to get Kessel. Sure, he may be a budding gem, even a 50-goal man some year, and the deal might have made sense had the Leafs been a top-10 team poised to crack the top five.

But for a team rebuilding, it made no sense then or now and will make even less each day we get closer to the April 13 NHL draft lottery and the focus shifts to a Boston-bound young star such as Hall, Tyler Seguin or Cam Fowler.
