We have already applauded the Patriots for resigning Vince Wilfork and Tully Banta Cain. We all cheered when Stephen Gostkowski and Logan Mankins were tendered. But let's face the facts, right now New England is a worse team than they were last year.
The Patriots resigned some pivotal players, but they only helped NE to a meidocre season last year. What about impact moves? Where are the fresh bodies that are going to propel this team to the top? Already the Pats missed out on Julius Peppers and Anquan Boldin, now it looks like they might lose Jarvis Green to the Broncos and Leigh Bodden to Houston.
Green was certainly a playmaker on D last year, and it looks like he is gone. That would mean that the Pats defense is going to suffer, and thus the current defense is worse than last year's corp. Bodden was a high energy cornerback, that truly helped a young Patriots secondary. Without him on the squad, who is the veteran guy? Brandon Meriweather?
The Patriots need to make a move, and they need to make it soon. They needed to resign Vince and company, and they did. But, Vince and Banta Cain don't make this team a Super Bowl quality team. I think fans are forgetting this. Everybody is so happy that the Pats worked out an extension with the big lineman, but are we forgetting that he was on our team last year? Vince will not come in and save this team. It is not going to happen. The Patriots need to be active, and it needs to be now. They already missed out on most of the prime free agent targets so far. They are also being outworked by New York and Miami so far in the offseason. This is not a good sign, as an already stacked Jets team is getting better.
Only time will tell if the Patriots improve their roster. If they started their season with the collection of players they have now, this Boston sports blog thinks they would look worse than they did in their 33-14 loss to Baltimore in the playoffs.
