Bruins Fall, Marc Savard Carried Out On Stretcher
UPDATE FROM THE BOSTON GLOBE: "Marc Savard has been diagnosed with a concussion as a result of an elbow by Matt Cooke at 14:23 of the third period. According to Claude Julien, Savard was knocked unconscious momentarily. Savard will remain in Pittsburgh overnight while his teammates travel to Toronto.
Julien said he expects Savard to be out "for a while." Julien termed it a classic blind-side hit."
The Bruins put up a decent effort today, yet fell to the Penguins in Pittsburgh by a 2-1 final. The big news of the game, however, came in the 3rd period when Marc Savard was wheeled off on a stretcher after receiving an elbow to the head by Pittsburgh forward Mark Cooke. The injury happened with 5:37 to go in the 3rd, and no penalty was called on the play.
Cooke raced from Savard's right, and completely blindsided him with his shoulder and elbow. Savard's stick went flying across the ice, and he laid motionless for quite some time. Upon being wheeled out, he was given a standing ovation, and the camera briefly caught Savard waving to the crowd. It is also being reported that he moved his arms and legs while still on the ice.
The Bruins did not respond after that. They did not go after any Penguin players, and Cooke was not seen on the ice for the remainder of the game. As a fan, I wanted somebody to make a stand for Savard. I mean, he is the best player the Bruins have. Yet, they acted a bit like cowards, and did not make anybody pay for the pathetic play on the part of Cooke. It was a huge tragedy that no penalty was called on the play, but it was an even bigger disappointment to see no Bruin players respond. Where is Milan Lucic or Sean Thornton in that situation? Somebody had to step up, yet nobody did.
Thoughts from Guy In The Balcony: Marc Savard took an elbow to the head from Matt Cooke after shooting the puck just inside the Penguins blueline. Savard immediately collapsed to the ice and was taken off on a stretcher. He raised his right arm and waved to the crowd as he was being taken off the ice. Matt Cooke is a piece of shit. No other way to say it. It was a dirty hit and extremely dangerous. If Colin Campbell, the league's official for incidents like this, doesn't give Cooke at least a three game suspension then he should be fired.
